Farmer Giles of Ham, by J.R.R. Tolkien. London: Unwin, 1984. Vintage paperback.

Tolkien’s short fable Farmer Giles of Ham is nothing short of lovely. The story tells of an unassuming farmer (Giles) who unwittingly becomes a hero when, by a stroke of luck, he forces an old giant to retreat. Later, when the dragon Chrysophylax strikes, Giles’s embellished reputation makes him the obvious choice to take him on. Quick and quirky, Farmer Giles of Ham is markedly different from Tolkien’s more epic and legendary works, but it is essential Tolkien nonetheless.

A great vintage copy of one of Tolkien’s funnest tales, with wonderful illustrations by the great Pauline Baynes (of Narnia fame).
