Grendel
“I UNDERSTOOD THAT THE WORLD WAS NOTHING…”
Grendel, by John Gardner. New York: Knopf, 1971. First edition.
John Gardner’s masterpiece, Grendel is a retelling of the Old English epic poem Beowulf from the perspective of the tale’s iconic monster. Gardner’s Grendel is a captivating antihero. Other, ostracized, loathed by all including himself, he nonetheless feels a deep connection to the humans he terrorizes. A self-identified monster trapped in a seemingly unending life of solitude, solipsism, and suffering, Grendel’s final battle with Beowulf becomes the culmination of his purpose as well as his deliverance. Grendel is a moving philosophical rumination on life and meaning, good and evil, myth and story. It was nominated for the Mythopoeic Award for best novel in 1972.
A very good+ copy. Outstanding original dust jacket with some rubbing but very little of the fading almost always found on the spine. Inconspicuous spotting to top edge of boards, mostly on back. Overall an excellent collectible copy.
