THE NOTORIOUS ‘PIRATED’ EDITION is the only paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings to follow the text of the first edition. Finding a legal loophole that (they argued) put the books in the public domain, ACE printed a run of this edition in 1965, but ceased production within a year after pressure from fans, the press, and Tolkien himself (who was not receiving royalties). They later paid the author a negotiated amount.

"It is written in my life-blood, such as that is, thick or thin; I can do no other," Tolkien wrote to his publisher on 31 July, 1947. He had just handed over his typescript of Book I of The Fellowship of the Ring for criticism three days prior. It was not, perhaps, the simple sequel to The Hobbit that was anticipated, but it was an undertaking like no other-the first part of one of the most ambitious and wholly original works of epic fantasy ever written.

Tolkien constructed his first fictional language at the age of seven. Scarcely a decade later, he'd already mastered several Germanic medieval languages and constructed many more nuanced languages of his own. By the time he'd begun to conceptualize the fictional peoples who would speak them, and the fictional world they would inhabit, Tolkien found himself thrust into World War I, facing firsthand the evils of this world in their most brutal forms.

The Lord of the Rings is the culmination of a lifetime of creativity, learning, and hard experience. It is a profound work of intelligent and intentional imagination, informed by Tolkien's deep familiarity with England's cultural and linguistic heritage and history, as well as by his personal experiences with evil and the machines of war. Evil, Tolkien knew, affects all, from the highest king to the smallest hobbit. But against all odds, in spite of all darkness that might spread in this world, hope persists, goodness wins. The Lord of the Rings is a (if not the) pinnacle of the fantasy genre, and a deeply important work of twentieth-century fiction.

Overall a very good, collectible set. Notable creasing and wear to wrappers and spine of Fellowship, as well as some damp-staining to edge of text block (not affecting the book internally). Two Towers and Return of the King both in excellent condition, with occasional wear. All volumes now protected in fitted mylar coverings.
