The Gunslinger

$125.00

The Gunslinger, by Stephen King. New York: The Viking Press, 2003. First edition, first printing of the first reprint of Donald M. Grant’s original 1982 limited edition.

Stephen King spent over thirty years composing his magnum opus: The Dark Tower series. This first volume, The Gunslinger, was begun in 1970 with the immortal words, “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” King would go on to write seven core volumes for the series and a retroactive eight novel situated between volumes four and five. King’s absolutely iconic hero, Roland Deschain, is a creative amalgamation of the twentieth-century rugged Western antihero (à la Clint Eastwood) and the mysterious legendary figures of the tales of King Arthur and Charlemagne (c.f. Browning’s “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came").

The Dark Tower is in many ways the crux of King’s oeuvre, with elements of the inventive multiverse and the dark tower itself bleeding into many of his other stories, like The Talisman (co-written with Peter Straub) and, most recently, the Gwendy trilogy (co-written with Richard Chizmar). It remains a hugely influential work of modern fantasy, and it all began with this classic book: The Gunslinger.

A near-fine copy in a fine dust jacket.
